Placidochromis Phenochilus (General Species/No Variant)

The Placidochromis phenochilus is a regal Haplochromine from Lake Malawi, prized for its iridescent blue coloration and peaceful demeanor. Unlike many of the more aggressive haps, this species tends to swim gracefully through the mid-water column, making it a perfect candidate for large, community-oriented Malawi tanks.

Mature males develop a brilliant electric to deep metallic blue body with scattered silvery-white spangles that increase with age—giving a starry "sapphire" effect. Females are more subdued, generally a soft grey with hints of blue. These fish appreciate open swimming space, but also benefit from rockwork or hardscape for security and territory.
