Placidochromis sp phenochilus "Tanzania” (Star Saphire)

The Star Sapphire is a standout Lake Malawi cichlid prized for its deep, shimmering blue to violet body and subtle metallic sparkle—especially under quality aquarium lighting. Males often exhibit rich sapphire and indigo hues with contrasting fin highlights, while females and juveniles tend to be more subdued with softer blues and silvers. Their elegant shape and vibrant coloration make them one of the most visually striking open-water cichlids in the hobby.

This species is considered moderate to advanced in care due to its size, activity level, and semi-aggressive temperament. Like most Placidochromis, Star Sapphires are active mid- to top-water swimmers and do best in well-structured African cichlid aquariums with stable, alkaline water and plenty of swimming space.

Care Requirements:

• Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons (larger is better for groups and social structure)

• Temperature: 24–28 °C

• pH: 7.8–8.6 (strongly alkaline)

• Water Hardness: Moderately hard to hard

• Temperament: Semi-aggressive (typical of Malawi peacers)

• Diet: Omnivore — high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, occasional live treats

Behavior & Compatibility:
Star Sapphires are best kept in Lake Malawi cichlid communities with other open-water or mid-water species of similar temperament and size (e.g., peacocks, Placidochromis of similar build). Avoid very small fish that could be seen as targets, and be aware that males may show dominance displays toward one another. Thoughtful aquascaping with rockwork and visual breaks helps reduce aggression.
