Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish | A Stunning and Unique Freshwater Bottom Dweller
The Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish (Rineloricaria sp., L010a) is one of the most visually striking and unusual bottom-dwelling fish available in the freshwater aquarium hobby. With its vivid red colouration, elongated twig-like body, flat belly, and distinctive whip-like tail, this fish looks unlike anything else in a community tank. Peaceful, hardy, and genuinely useful as part of your aquarium's cleanup crew, the Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish is an excellent choice for planted aquariums and South American biotope setups alike.
The exact origins of this species remain a mystery — most believe it to be a selectively line-bred or hybrid form of Rineloricaria, developed specifically for its intense red colouration. All specimens available in the hobby are tank-bred, making them adaptable and well-suited to aquarium life.

Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish Tank Setup
A natural, well-planted setup suits these fish perfectly. Fine sand substrate is strongly recommended to protect their delicate barbels, and the tank should include plenty of hiding spots — driftwood, flat rocks, slate caves, and PVC half-pipes all work well and double as potential spawning sites. Subdued lighting is preferred, as this species is primarily nocturnal and will feel more confident and visible in a dimmer environment. Water flow should be gentle to moderate — they do not appreciate strong currents.
Feeding Your Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish
Omnivorous and relatively unfussy. They will graze on algae and biofilm as juveniles but lean more carnivorous as they mature, so a varied diet is important. Offer sinking catfish pellets and algae wafers as a staple, and supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, and cyclops. Blanched vegetables such as cucumber, zucchini, kale, and spinach are also readily accepted. Avoid keeping them with boisterous tank mates at feeding time — these are calm, unhurried feeders that will lose out to more competitive species.
Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish Tank Mates
- Small to medium peaceful tetras, rasboras, and pencilfish
- Corydoras and other small, peaceful catfish
- Dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma and Mikrogeophagus
- Shrimp and snails — generally safe, though larger specimens may eat very small shrimp fry
- Avoid boisterous, fast-moving, or aggressive species that will outcompete them for food
Breeding the Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish
Red Lizard Whiptails breed readily in the home aquarium, making them a rewarding species for hobbyists interested in catfish breeding. The male selects and cleans a cave or tube as a spawning site — PVC half-pipes and clay caves work perfectly. The female deposits around 50 greenish-gold eggs, which are then guarded and tended exclusively by the male until they hatch in 6–8 days. Cool partial water changes are a reliable trigger for spawning behaviour. Note that fry are sensitive to water quality, so pristine conditions are essential during the early stages.
