Apistogramma viejita, commonly known as the Viejita Dwarf Cichlid, is a vibrant and personality-packed species from the Orinoco River basin in Colombia. This particular variant, often referred to as the ‘Red Neck’ Viejita, is prized for the vivid reddish-orange coloration that appears on the throat and face of mature males, paired with elongated dorsal extensions and shimmering blues and yellows across the body.

Like most Apistogramma species, Viejitas thrive in heavily planted tanks with ample hiding spaces such as driftwood, leaf litter, and caves. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water and do best when housed in peaceful communities or species-only setups with plenty of visual breaks. Males can be territorial during breeding, but aggression is typically limited to displays rather than physical harm.
