Red Tail Hemiodus Tetra - Hemiodus Gracilis

The Red Tail Hemiodus is a sleek, fast-swimming schooling fish known for its torpedo-shaped body, shimmering silver coloration, and striking red tail. A subtle dark lateral line runs along the body, adding contrast and enhancing its streamlined, high-energy appearance. When kept in a proper group, they create an impressive, synchronized display as they move together through the water.

This species is very active and requires ample open swimming space. They are best suited to larger aquariums where their natural schooling behavior can really be appreciated.

Care Requirements:
A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks strongly preferred due to their constant movement and schooling nature. They thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow and plenty of open space, along with some structured areas for security. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are known jumpers.

Diet:
Red Tail Hemiodus are omnivorous and will accept a wide variety of foods. Feed a high-quality flake or pellet as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet helps maintain their condition and coloration.

Tankmates:
They are peaceful but very active, making them best suited to larger community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Good tankmates include larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and other active schooling species. Avoid very small fish that may be outcompeted for food or stressed by their activity level.

They should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more, with larger groups providing the best behavior and visual impact.
