Description & Care Info ▼
A Rare River Dweller With Real Character
The Redtail Garra is a relatively new and uncommon species in the aquarium hobby, making it a genuinely exciting find for aquarists who appreciate something out of the ordinary. Native to the river systems of Thailand, this active, robust fish is built for life in fast-flowing water — equipped with a specialised adhesive disc formed by modified lips that allows it to cling to rocks and surfaces in strong currents, much like a hillstream loach.
Its standout feature is its vivid reddish-orange tail, which contrasts sharply against its streamlined, earthy-toned body. As it goes about its constant business of grazing algae and biofilm from rocks and hardscape, it's endlessly watchful and entertaining.
Made for a River-Style Setup
Garra panitvongi thrives in well-oxygenated, flowing water and does best in an aquarium that reflects its natural riverine habitat — good flow, high oxygen levels, smooth rocks and cobbles to graze on, and plenty of hiding spots. Flat rocks and hardscape surfaces are ideal as they allow biofilm and algae to develop naturally, which these fish will graze on throughout the day.
A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as Garra species are known to be capable jumpers.
Care at a Glance
- Adult size: 8–12 cm (approximately 3–5 inches)
- Minimum tank size: 120 litres (30 gallons) — longer tanks preferred over taller ones
- Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
- pH: 6.5–7.5
- Strong water flow and high oxygenation essential
- Lifespan: 5–8 years with good care
Feeding
Primarily a grazer of algae and biofilm in the wild. In the aquarium they will readily accept algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm and daphnia. Moderate to bright lighting helps encourage biofilm growth, which forms an important part of their natural diet.
Compatible With
- Other river-dwelling species such as loaches, hillstream loaches, and danios
- Peaceful mid and upper water fish of similar size
- Can be territorial with other Garra species — provide plenty of visual barriers and hiding spots
- Avoid long-finned or slow-moving tank mates that may be nipped or stressed by their active nature
