Rotala Rotundifolia

Rotala rotundifolia is one of the most popular and versatile stem plants used in planted aquariums. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is prized for its adaptability, fast growth, and ability to develop beautiful shades of green, pink, and orange depending on lighting conditions. Despite its name meaning “round-leaved,” the submerged leaves are actually narrow and elongated, forming graceful vertical stems that sway gently in the current.

Under moderate lighting the plant stays bright green, but with stronger lighting and good nutrients it begins to develop warm pink to reddish tones, especially at the growing tips. Because of its easy nature and quick growth, Rotala rotundifolia is often recommended for both beginner and experienced aquascapers.

Growth & Maintenance

Rotala rotundifolia grows quickly and benefits from regular trimming to keep it dense and bushy. When stems reach the surface, simply cut the tops and replant them into the substrate to propagate new plants. This technique allows aquarists to create thick, vibrant clusters over time.

While CO₂ injection and fertilization will greatly improve growth and coloration, this species can still perform well in lower-tech aquariums compared to many other red stem plants.
