Rotala rotundifolia | A Beginner-Friendly Stem Plant With Stunning Colour Potential
Rotala rotundifolia is one of the most popular and widely grown stem plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby — and for very good reason. Native to the paddies, marshes, and waterways of South-East Asia, this elegant, fast-growing stem plant produces long, slender stems of 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) lined with narrow, delicate leaves that bring a fine, feathery texture to planted aquascapes. Under good lighting, the stems take on a warm pinkish-red to deep red colouration that intensifies toward the tips — creating a stunning gradient effect that is one of the most popular and sought-after looks in the planted aquarium hobby.
Despite its striking appearance, Rotala rotundifolia is one of the most forgiving and beginner-friendly stem plants available — relatively undemanding, fast-growing, and tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. It is an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels who want lush, colourful planting without the demanding requirements of more challenging red stem plants.
A Note on the Name
The name rotundifolia means "round-leaved" in Latin — but this refers only to the emersed marsh form of the plant, which does indeed produce small, circular leaves. The fully submerged aquarium form develops long, narrow leaves that look quite different from its terrestrial counterpart. This plant is also widely sold under the name Rotala indica, though the two are now considered distinct species by botanists.

Getting the Best Colour
Rotala rotundifolia will grow readily in low light, but its most impressive red and pink colouration only develops under good to high light intensity. In lower light the plant remains a softer green with pink hints — still attractive, but nowhere near as striking as a well-lit specimen glowing deep red at the tips. CO2 supplementation and a quality liquid fertiliser further enhance colouration and keep the plant looking lush and vibrant.
Planting and Pruning Tips
Plant in groups of 5 or more stems for the most dramatic and natural display. Rotala rotundifolia branches willingly and naturally, quickly forming a dense, bushy clump — but this density means light struggles to penetrate to the lower stems over time, causing lower leaves to die back. Regular pruning is essential to keep the plant looking its best. Trim the tops regularly, replant the cuttings to fill in gaps, and remove any bare lower stems to maintain a healthy, full appearance. The more frequently it is trimmed, the bushier and more compact the growth becomes.
Compatible With
- All community fish, shrimp, and snails
