Rummy Nose Tetra | One of the Hobby's Most Iconic Schooling Fish

The Rummy Nose Tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus) is one of the most instantly recognisable and beloved schooling fish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Native to the soft, acidic blackwater rivers of the Amazon Basin in South America, this elegant little tetra is prized for its striking tricolour pattern — a vivid red blush covering the entire head and nose, a silver torpedo-shaped body, and a boldly striped black and white tail that flickers like a beacon as the school moves through the water together.

What truly sets the Rummy Nose Tetra apart from other schooling fish is the tightness and precision of its schooling behaviour. Few fish school as cohesively or as beautifully as a large group of Rummy Noses — moving in perfect synchronisation, turning as one, and catching the light together in a way that is one of the most mesmerising sights the freshwater hobby has to offer.

A Natural Water Quality Indicator

Experienced fishkeepers have long used the Rummy Nose Tetra as a living water quality test. When water parameters are ideal, their red colouration is vivid and intense. When water quality declines, stress levels rise, or parameters shift, the red fades noticeably — giving attentive aquarists an early warning sign that something needs attention before it becomes a serious problem.

Rummy Nose Tetra Tank Setup

A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space, subdued lighting, and gentle water flow reflects the Rummy Nose Tetra's natural blackwater habitat perfectly. Dark substrate, driftwood, floating plants to diffuse light, and tannins from Indian almond leaves or botanicals will help bring out the full intensity of their red colouration and make them feel secure and confident. These fish are sensitive to water quality fluctuations and do best in a mature, well-established aquarium with stable parameters — they are not ideal for newly cycled tanks.

Feeding Your Rummy Nose Tetras

Omnivores and easy to feed. A high quality micro flake or small sinking pellet makes an excellent staple, supplemented regularly with frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm. Variety helps maintain their vivid colouration and long term health.

How Many Rummy Nose Tetras Should You Keep?

These are a true schooling species and should be kept in groups of at least 8, though 12 or more produces the most impressive and natural schooling behaviour. The larger the school, the tighter and more synchronised the group will swim — and the more dramatic the visual impact in a planted aquascape.

Rummy Nose Tetra Tank Mates

  • Other small, peaceful South American tetras and pencilfish
  • Corydoras and small, peaceful bottom dwellers
  • Dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma and German Blue Rams
  • Shrimp — generally safe with adults, use caution with very small juvenile shrimp
  • Avoid large or aggressive fish that may intimidate or prey on them
  • Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping species
