Seiryu Stone | Classic Aquascaping Rock for Nature-Style and Iwagumi Aquariums

Seiryu Stone — also known as Mini Landscape Rock — is the most iconic and widely used aquascaping stone in the freshwater hobby. Its dramatic grey-blue colouration, sharp angular edges, and intricate surface texture of ridges, crevices, and natural veining give it a bold, mountainous quality that is immediately recognisable and endlessly versatile in aquascape design. From sprawling nature-style layouts to minimalist Iwagumi compositions, Seiryu Stone has defined the aesthetic of planted aquarium hardscaping for decades — and for good reason.

Each piece is completely unique in shape, size, and surface detail, making every aquascape built with Seiryu Stone genuinely one of a kind.

Aquascaping With Seiryu Stone

Seiryu Stone is the foundation of the Iwagumi style — a Japanese aquascaping approach built around odd-numbered groupings of stones, negative space, and carpeting plants that create a sense of scale, balance, and natural landscape. Its angular, layered texture also works beautifully in nature-style layouts alongside driftwood, where its cool grey-blue tones complement warm brown wood tones and lush green planting for a striking and cohesive composition.

Its creviced surface provides an excellent attachment point for mosses, Anubias, and Bucephalandra, which gradually soften and naturalise the stone’s form over time — one of the most rewarding long-term effects in planted aquarium keeping.

A Note on Water Chemistry

Seiryu Stone contains calcium carbonate and will gradually raise the pH and hardness of your aquarium water over time. This is worth being aware of before adding it to your tank — particularly in soft water setups and shrimp tanks where stable, lower pH is important.

To assess the impact before committing, place a piece in a container of your tank water and test pH and hardness after 24–48 hours. A significant rise indicates the stone will affect your parameters meaningfully. For soft water and planted tanks, monitor parameters regularly after adding Seiryu Stone and perform water changes as needed to maintain stability. For African cichlid tanks and other setups that benefit from harder, more alkaline water, this effect is a genuine advantage rather than a concern.

Preparation and Safety

  • Rinse thoroughly under clean tap water before adding to the aquarium — never use soap, detergent, or any cleaning products, as even trace residue is toxic to fish, shrimp, and invertebrates
  • Do not boil or bake natural rock — extreme temperature changes can cause rocks to crack or shatter. A thorough rinse under running water is all that is needed
  • Position stones carefully and ensure they are stable and secure before adding water — a shifting rock in a filled tank can crack glass or injure fish
  • Mosses, Anubias, and Bucephalandra attach readily to the textured surface with fishing line or aquarium-safe glue
  • Each piece is completely unique — natural variation in shape, size, and surface detail is part of the appeal

Ideal For

  • Iwagumi and nature-style aquascapes
  • Planted aquariums as a primary hardscape feature
  • African cichlid tanks — the pH-raising properties are a natural benefit for Rift Lake setups
  • Shrimp tanks with harder water parameters — textured surfaces develop excellent biofilm for grazing
  • Mixed hardscape layouts alongside driftwood

A Note on Sizing and Weight

Our rocks are sold by approximate weight in the following tiers:

  • 0–5 lb — Small pack
  • 6–10 lb — Medium pack
  • 11–15 lb — Large pack
  • 16–20 lb — Extra Large pack

Because these are natural stones, no two pieces are identical in shape, size, or weight — and it is impossible to pack rocks to an exact pound. Your order will always meet or exceed the weight of the tier you select, but may occasionally run slightly over. The number of individual pieces per pack will vary depending on the size and shape of the stones available at the time of packing.

If you have specific sizing requirements or are planning a particular aquascape layout and need pieces of a certain scale, feel free to reach out before ordering and we will do our best to accommodate.
