Description & Care Info

The Bottom Dweller With a Personality All Its Own

The Spotted Kuhli Loach is one of the most distinctive and characterful fish you can add to a freshwater aquarium. Unlike its banded cousin, this species is identifiable by its slender orange body adorned with an irregular pattern of dark blotches — a look that's both unique and endlessly fascinating up close.

Shy by nature and most active after lights out, these peaceful scavengers spend their time exploring every corner of the tank floor, weaving through plants and burrowing into soft substrate in search of food. Once they settle in, their quirky, curious behaviour becomes one of the highlights of any tank.

Built for the Bottom of the Tank

Spotted Kuhli Loaches are natural scavengers, constantly patrolling the substrate and cleaning up any food that other fish miss. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with a soft, sandy substrate that protects their delicate barbels, and appreciate plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and leaf litter. They are best kept in groups, which brings out their social nature and reduces stress.

Care at a Glance

  • Minimum tank size: 20 gallons (80 litres) — floor space matters more than height
  • Temperature: 24–29°C (75–85°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel — sharp gravel can damage their sensitive skin and barbels
  • Grows to approximately 3–4 inches (8–10 cm)
  • Lifespan: up to 10 years with good care

Feeding

Omnivores and unfussy eaters. They readily accept high-quality sinking pellets, flake food, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feed after lights out for best results, as they are most active at night.

Compatible With

  • Tetras, rasboras, danios, corydoras, mollies, and peaceful gouramis
  • Avoid housing with snails — they are likely to be eaten
  • Use caution with shrimp, especially smaller species

A Note on Tank Setup

Make sure your tank has a tight-fitting lid — these fish are curious explorers and can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Ensure filter intakes are covered, as they have a habit of investigating tight spaces.
