Description & Care Info ▼
Small Fish, Big Energy
The Striped Kyathit, or Orange Finned Danio, is one of the most lively and eye-catching nano fish you can add to a community aquarium. Native to the fast-moving rivers of Myanmar, this torpedo-shaped danio sports 5 to 7 dark longitudinal stripes along a golden-bronze body, with vivid reddish-orange fins that glow brilliantly under aquarium lighting. Active, hardy, and endlessly entertaining, they bring constant movement and energy to any planted tank.
There are two colour morphs of Danio kyathit — striped and spotted. This listing is for the striped form.
Better in Numbers
Kyathit Danios are a schooling species and truly come into their own in groups of 8 or more. Kept in good numbers, males will display their brightest colours as they compete for female attention, and the group will school actively throughout the tank. They look especially spectacular against dark substrate and lush planting, where their orange fins really pop.
Care at a Glance
- Adult size: up to 4–5 cm (approximately 1.5–2 inches)
- Minimum tank size: 80 litres (20 gallons) — they are active swimmers and need space
- Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)
- pH: 6.5–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5–15 dGH)
- Best kept in groups of 8 or more
- Lifespan: 3–5 years with good care
Tank Setup
A well-planted tank with open swimming space and a gentle to moderate current suits them perfectly, reflecting their natural fast-water habitat. Dark substrate and floating plants help bring out their colouration. They are active mid-water to surface swimmers, so taller plants and open areas work well together.
Feeding
Unfussy omnivores. They readily accept high-quality flake or micro pellet food as a staple, and will benefit from regular supplements of frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm.
Compatible With
- Other small, peaceful danios, rasboras, and tetras
- Corydoras and small loaches
- Shrimp and snails
- Avoid slow-moving, long-finned fish that may be stressed by their boisterous activity
