The Sunshine Peacock is a dazzling Lake Malawi cichlid renowned for its radiant yellow-gold body and shimmering metallic accents. Males often display intense golden hues with hints of blue or green iridescence on the face and fins, creating a warm, sun-lit presence in the aquarium. Females tend to be more subdued but still carry soft gold and silver tones. Their graceful swimming and bright color make them a striking focal point in African cichlid setups.
This species is considered moderate in care—typical of Peacock cichlids. They thrive in stable, alkaline water and require adequate space, hiding spots, and compatible tankmates. While generally less aggressive than some Mbuna cichlids, males can be territorial, especially during breeding or in crowded conditions.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons
-
Temperature: 24–28 °C
-
pH: 7.8–8.6 (alkaline conditions)
-
Water Hardness: Moderately hard to hard
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (typical Malawi cichlid behavior)
-
Diet: Omnivore — high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods
Compatibility & Behavior:
Sunshine Peacocks do well in Lake Malawi cichlid communities alongside other Peacock cichlids and compatible Haplochromines. Avoid very aggressive Mbuna or very small, delicate fish that could be stressed by territorial displays. Including ample rockwork and visual breaks helps reduce aggression and supports natural territories.
