Three Beacon Pleco L-091 - Leporacanthicus Triactis

The Three Beacon Pleco (L091), Leporacanthicus triactis, is a striking and uncommon pleco prized for its bold contrast and sleek, predatory appearance. This species features a dark charcoal to black body highlighted by three bright white or yellowish bands—one behind the head, one mid-body, and one near the tail—giving rise to its common name. Like other members of the Leporacanthicus genus, it also develops pronounced cheek odontodes (spine-like bristles) that add to its dramatic look.

Native to fast-flowing rivers in the Amazon basin, the Three Beacon Pleco thrives in well-oxygenated aquariums with strong filtration and moderate water movement. Plenty of caves, driftwood, and rocky hiding spots are important, as this species prefers shaded areas where it can retreat during the day. They are most active in the evening and at night, emerging to forage once the lights dim.

Unlike many common plecos that graze on algae and wood, Leporacanthicus triactis is primarily carnivorous. It does best on a protein-rich diet including high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and other meaty offerings. While generally peaceful toward mid- and upper-level fish, they may be territorial toward other plecos or bottom dwellers if space is limited.

With the right setup and stable water conditions, the Three Beacon Pleco can grow to around 10–12 inches and becomes a fascinating centerpiece for larger aquariums.
