Vallisneria spiralis, often called Italian Vallisneria, is a hardy and fast-growing background plant known for its long, ribbon-like leaves that sway gently in the water current. Despite the name “spiralis,” most aquarium strains grow straight leaves rather than twisted ones. Native to parts of Europe and Asia, this classic aquarium plant has been a staple in freshwater tanks for decades due to its adaptability and natural grass-like appearance.
The bright to medium green leaves grow upward in tall, flowing blades, creating a lush backdrop that works especially well in community aquariums, cichlid tanks, and natural biotope setups. As the plant matures it sends out runners that produce new plantlets, allowing it to quickly form dense underwater meadows.

Growth & Maintenance
Vallisneria spiralis is extremely beginner-friendly and thrives in a wide range of water conditions. Once established, it spreads through horizontal runners, producing new plants that can be left to form a thick background or separated and replanted elsewhere in the aquarium.
The plant benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs, as it primarily feeds through its roots. Leaves may grow quite long and can be trimmed if needed, though cutting the tips may sometimes cause browning along the cut edge.
