Description & Care Info

The Vampire Pleco (L240 / L029), Leporacanthicus galaxias, is a striking and highly sought-after pleco known for its deep black body covered in tiny white “star-like” spots. These spots resemble a galaxy scattered across its body, giving the species its scientific name galaxias. Combined with its bold shape and impressive odontodes (bristle-like cheek spines), this species has a dramatic and somewhat intimidating appearance that easily becomes a centerpiece in larger aquariums.

Native to fast-flowing rivers in the Amazon basin, Vampire Plecos prefer well-oxygenated water with strong filtration and moderate current. Unlike many common plecos, this species is more carnivorous and benefits from a diet rich in protein. They readily accept high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms or mysis shrimp, and other meaty aquarium foods. Driftwood, rock caves, and shaded hiding spots are important for their comfort, as they tend to be more active during the evening and nighttime hours.

Despite their fierce appearance, Vampire Plecos are generally peaceful toward most tankmates but can be territorial with other bottom-dwelling fish or plecos, especially in smaller aquariums. They do best in spacious tanks with plenty of hiding places to establish territories. With proper care, these unique plecos can grow to around 10–12 inches and become long-lived, fascinating residents.

This species is best suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists who can provide stable water conditions and a protein-rich diet.
