The Venustus, commonly known as the Giraffe Hap, is a bold and impressive African cichlid recognized for its distinctive giraffe-like patterning. Its golden-yellow base color is overlaid with irregular brown blotches, giving it a striking, camouflaged appearance. Mature males develop intense blue coloration on the face and head, especially when dominant or breeding, creating a dramatic contrast against the patterned body.
This species is considered moderate to advanced in care due to its size, strength, and semi-aggressive temperament. Native to Lake Malawi, Venustus are open-water predators that appreciate spacious aquariums with plenty of swimming room, rocky structures, and stable water parameters. They can grow quite large and require careful stocking to manage aggression.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 125 gallons
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH: 7.8–8.6
-
Water Hardness: Moderately hard to hard (alkaline conditions required)
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive to aggressive
-
Diet: Carnivore — high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods (avoid excessive protein from mammalian sources)
Venustus should be kept with other appropriately sized Lake Malawi cichlids, particularly other Haplochromines or larger Peacock cichlids. They are not suitable for peaceful community aquariums and should not be housed with small fish, which may be viewed as prey. A well-structured aquascape and proper male-to-female ratios help reduce aggression.
A large, giraffe-patterned Malawi cichlid with bold personality—best suited for spacious African cichlid aquariums.
