Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss' | A Graceful and Cascading Aquarium Moss
Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss' is one of the most elegant and visually distinctive mosses available in the planted aquarium hobby. Believed to originate from China and first distributed by Oriental Aquarium Plants, this beautiful moss is immediately recognisable by its unique drooping, cascading growth habit — producing delicate, teardrop-shaped bright green shoots that hang downward in soft, flowing curtains, creating a weeping willow-like effect that is unlike any other aquarium moss. Sold in portions, it is an affordable and versatile way to add extraordinary texture, depth, and natural beauty to any aquascape.
At just half an inch to just over an inch tall (1–3 cm), Weeping Moss stays compact while its pendulous shoots trail gracefully downward from whatever surface it is attached to — making it one of the most effective and beautiful ways to bring movement and a sense of age and established nature to driftwood, rocks, and hardscape.
Why We Love It
The drooping growth pattern of Weeping Moss creates a sense of depth and dimension in the aquascape that upright-growing mosses simply cannot replicate. Attached to an elevated piece of driftwood or a prominent rock, it cascades downward in layers — mimicking the appearance of moss-draped branches overhanging a forest stream. It is equally stunning in shrimp tanks, where the delicate shoots provide ideal grazing surfaces, shelter for moulting shrimp, and a safe refuge for shrimplets.
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss'
- Also known as: Weeping Moss, Hanging Moss
- Origin: China — distributed by Oriental Aquarium Plants
- Growth rate: Fast
- Height: 0.5–1.5 inches (1–3 cm)
- Light demand: Low — tolerates a wide range of lighting conditions
- CO2: Not required, though supplementation encourages faster, lusher growth
- Best placement: Attached to driftwood, roots, or elevated hardscape where its drooping habit can be fully appreciated
Attaching and Maintaining Weeping Moss
Attach to driftwood, rocks, or hardscape using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue — moss pins or mesh can also be used to spread it evenly across a larger surface. It will gradually root itself in place over several weeks. Because of its fast growth rate, regular pruning with sharp scissors is essential to maintain its attractive weeping shape and prevent it from becoming overgrown and tangled. Trim little and often rather than cutting back heavily all at once for the best results.
Compatible With
- All community fish, shrimp, and snails
- Exceptional in shrimp tanks — provides ideal grazing surfaces, cover, and shelter for shrimplets
- Suitable for low-tech setups, nano tanks, and virtually any aquascape style
- Particularly stunning paired with Anubias, Java Fern, and other epiphytic plants on shared hardscape
